Trimming The Tree At Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel

Christmas Decoration Rises To New Heights

As you can see from the picture trimming the Christmas tree at the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel takes on a whole new meaning. Now rising to a height of almost 100 feet our landmark conifer was in desperate need of a 'spruce up' (pardon the pun) which was skillfully delivered by local tree surgeons Morris's Of Usk.

The tree has now been dressed with a new set of Christmas lights and is all ready to welcome our many guests throughout the festive season.

Once again Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel has risen to new heights to ensure that we offer the very best of Christmas hospitality with of course all of the 'trimmings'.

A Little Something For The 'TOP DRAW'

Competition Winners Get Tasty Treat

Pictured above are the winners of the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel's Usk Show Competitions, presented on Sunday 15th November 2009 by Pam Watkins - Functions Co-ordinator at the hotel.

Two competitions were run from our stall at the very successful Usk show in September this year; the first was the 'Create a pudding recipe' competition. Head Chef Julie Carey set a challenge to those budding chefs to create a pudding recipe for a pudding that could be made and used here at the hotel.

The winner - Bethan Roberts (middle) from Abergavenny received her prize of £20.00 WH Smith voucher together with an opportunity to work with Julie here at the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel & Clarkes Restaurant in the new year. She will recreate her pudding which will be offered to guests from our A La Carte menu.

The second competition had two age groups; both of which were asked to colour in a picture of the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel. In the 8 -10 year old age group, the winner was Connor Watts from Newport and in the up to 8 years old the winner was Megan Roberts from Abergavenny. Both received a voucher for sunday luncheon here at Glen-Yr-Afon together with art materials from WH Smith.

As a special treat they all had their caricatures drawn by Picassso Griffiths who was perhaps checking out his future competition?

Monmouthshire's favourite country house hotel was once again given an increase in its quality score during a recent inspection by the Automobile Association (AA).

Comment was made about the high levels of hospitality and the consistently maintained quality of our accommodation.

A Perfect Wedding 'Reception'

A Perfect Wedding 'Reception'

The Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel was lucky enough to host the recent wedding reception of Kathryn Francis and Philip Lewis on Saturday 6th December 2008.

Kathryn a former member of the hotel team (and daughter of our Function co-ordinator Pam) is pictured above at the front desk with her new husband showing that it is a most perfect match without reservation.

With not a cloud in the sky the happy couple were married at Llantilio Crossenny Church followed by their reception at the hotel. Guests were welcomed on this crisp day by mulled wine and mince pies followed by a sumptuous wedding breakfast.

The many evening guests were treated to local musicians The Last Resort Band and of course a fabulous evening buffet that only the Glen-Yr-Afon can provide.

The happy couple are on honeymoon in the Dominican Republic and we wish them all the very best for a long and healthy future together.

Dame Ellen MacArthur Visits Glen-Yr-Afon House

Hotel Team Adds Sparkle To Business Week Launch

The Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel was honoured when it was chosen as the favoured venue for the Business Week launch breakfast on 20 October attended by guest speaker Dame Ellen MacArthur. The record breaking yachtswoman entertained guests with tales of her single-handed sailing exploits and explained her current role in raising awareness in the better use of energy resources.

The Glen-Yr-Afon presented her with a Jeroboam of champagne to signal the Business Week’s official launch and Dame Ellen was delighted to have a photo taken with some of the team that in her own words 'had made her stay so very comfortable'.

Another first for Monmouthshire's favourite hotel!

Fashion Show Extravaganza

It was a great excuse for a good night out with friends and for a very worthwhile cause, the evening finally raised £  for the charity.

Why not enjoy a visit to The Copper Tree in Usk and then finish off with Lunch in Clarkes Restaurant, the perfect combination.

Two Birds In The Hand

The recent Wedding of Amanda Hale and Mathew Carter at Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel involved an aerial flight long before the honeymoon began.

Following the wedding ceremony in the hotel ballroom the newly married couple joined by Master Thomas Carter released three white doves into the sky to celebrate the occasion.

In these days of congestion on the roads the trainer from 'Lovey Dovey' explained, it wouldn't take much more than 20 minutes for the birds to fly back to their home in Pontypridd as it was a fairly direct journey - as the dove flies!

Last But One Night Of The Proms

The penultimate of our school proms brought an unusual visitor to the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel in the guise of Scooby Doo.

Amongst the vast array of stretch limousines and exotic cars was the very recognisable 'Mystery Machine' dropping off some very glamourous students for their big night at Monmouthshire's favourite country house hotel.

The pupils, all from Yr11 at St Albans School enjoyed a gala red carpet arrival and a sumptuous buffet which of course only the Glen-Yr-Afon can deliver.

The staff and management wish all of them the very best of success with their forthcoming exam results and future endeavours.

Usk's Seven Wonders

The Return Of The Magnificent Seven

Saturday 31st May 2008 saw the return of the the Caterham Seven Club to the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel prior to their odessey to North Wales.

An early arrival, heralded by the noise of the well tuned engines soon saw the hotel car park full of Caterham sevens. As usual the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel catered for the drivers and their passengers providing bacon rolls and tea / coffee to sustain them for their journey to follow.

At the appointed hour the cars then left in small convoys leaving behind them many astonished wedding guests who loved seeing the cars and £155.00 in profit which was generously donated to the local leukaemia fund by the club.
