Busy time in the kitchen for our fantastic team of chefs! This year will see Head Chef Julie Carey's 24th Christmas here - her experience and culinery expertise is a major factor in our reputation for fabulous food!

Already planning her 25th anniversary here next year, Julie is excited about the future for Clarkes Restaurant. If you have any questions about her menus, dishes or dining experiences please email them to

Charity Vintage Tea Party

Charity Tea Party

In the last month one colleague and one former colleague have both had close relatives who have undergone liver transplants at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Birmingham.

As part of our charity fundraising for 2015, it seems fitting that the next event we arrange should be in aid of the Children's Liver Disease Foundation, a charity that has been very much in the forefront recently of the two families affected.

We are arranging a Vintage Tea Party on Sunday 30th August 2015 and will be holding a raffle to raise as much as we can to support this worthwhile cause.

Tickets for the vintage afternoon tea will be priced at £20 for adults / £10 for children (aged 8 and under) with a generous percentage of ticket sales going straight to the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation as well as all funds raised in the raffle.

Raffle tickets will be available to purchase on the day for £1 per ticket. We have received lots of gift donations to be raffled and will be updating these on our website as they come in.

At this stage the prizes include: Sunday lunch for 2, family photo shoot, cupcakes, wine and kids photoshoot. The raffle will be drawn on the afternoon of the event.

We hope to see you at this event in aid of such a worthy cause.

Velothon Wales Wedding 2015

Sunday 14th June 2015 and Velothon Wales day dawned!

Photograph: Treasured Photography

Having only been made aware that the Velothon would result in prolonged road closures in March 2015,  the team at the Glen Yr Afon House Hotel, Usk faced a considerable amount of additional planning to make sure the day's events at the Hotel went to plan.

As a popular wedding venue in South Wales, the Hotel had a large wedding planned on both Saturday 13th June and Sunday 14th June - with a large group of wedding guests at each one. With the weddings being planned with two years notice (long before the Velothon was announced), staff were intent on assisting to resolve the problems posed by the access roads to the Hotel being closed from 7.30am to late afternoon.

Both couples were understandably anxious, upset and worried that the disruption would have a detrimental effect on their wedding plans but assurances and help from the Glen Yr Afon team helped them through the stressful time of planning around the Velothon.

A lot of prior preparation and liaison with the event organisers took place in the weeks leading up to the Velothon and thankfully, on the day itself, the team were delighted to work with Phil and Dave who were the escort team assigned to make sure the Bride and the Bridal party arrived for the wedding on time!  A blessing!  Both were obviously experienced moto escorts and had plenty of common sense which helped enormously in the problems faced.

They promptly and efficiently escorted Saturdays wedding guests from the Hotel in a motor convoy, making sure they were safely placed on their journies back home.  They then turned their attentions to collecting the Bride and escorting the wedding cars through the closed roads to the Hotel.

Meanwhile, at the Hotel staff were in constant liasion with the Marshall assigned to the Hotel entrance to liaise with Velothon colleagues to collect and escort the wedding guests arriving for the Sunday wedding.  Many of the guests had travelled considerable distances to join the happy couple and staff were keen to make sure they were not unduly delayed in arriving in plenty of time for the day's celebrations.

Whilst sadly the Velothon led to many customers cancelling their bookings for Sunday lunch due to the road restrictions, those that were brave enough to make the journey were also catered for in the arrangements by being individually escorted in time for their Sunday lunch and birthday celebration!

In summary ,  the Hotel team did a first class job of helping make sure all of the guests experienced minimal disruption so their plans could go ahead.

Thank you team - and very best wishes to Mr and Mrs Newby who got married at the Glen Yr Afon House Hotel, Usk, on Velothon Wales day 2015!

Yasmin Mahmood of event organisers Creative Oceanic commented “After the great success of the Food Awards England and Wales which were held in Manchester last year, it was apparent the Welsh food industry deserved a greater platform for recognition.

40 years of service

Glen Yr Afon House Hotel celebrates its 40th birthday

The Glen Yr Afon House Hotel in Usk, will celebrate its 40th birthday on 23rd March - 40 years to the day when it opened its doors to the very first customers. Since then, the hotel has welcomed many thousands of guests through the doors for family celebrations, weddings, dining or a stay in one of its 27 guest bedrooms.

In 1973 the Glen-Yr-Afon was bought by Peter and Jan Clarke together with another couple Rosemary and John Saunders although it soon came under their sole ownership when the Saunders' decided to leave and start a family. Today, Peter and Jan Clarke remain as Directors together with Tim Strong and Alex Brown who have both worked in the business since their teens.

Tim Strong, General Manager believes a total commitment to customer service has been the key to success: ‘as a business that has evolved over four decades the challenge has been to maintain the same fundamental standards as were set on the day the Hotel welcomed its first customers – giving excellent personal customer service and attention to detail. Thankfully we have a highly experienced team who share the same desire to make sure that every customer experience here is one they will always remember for the right reasons.’

Peter Clarke said “It has been a labour of love for 40 years with a lot of hard work but we remain as committed to excellent customer service today as we did back at the start’’

Interestingly the estate agent's documents from the purchase commented "It is a property with considerable potential for improvement". Many extensions to the original building have followed over the years with the Dining Room and Bar changing many times and the addition of the Library in 1982. The largest extension was completed in 1992 which added a further 12 bedrooms to the hotel together with a large function suite and an extended Dining Room.

The hotel’s 40th anniversary year will be celebrated at an evening of nostalgia on Sunday 23rd March where some of the hotel’s first customers will join the staff and other guests to mark the milestone anniversary. Guests include the very first couple who got married at the Hotel and their son and future daughter-in-law who have also set the date for their big day at the Hotel next year.

Charity Donations

Charity Cheques presented

The Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel held a presentation ceremony recently to donate funds raised at the Usk Show in September to local worthwhile charities.

A beautiful wooden dolls house kindly crafted and donated by Mr and Mrs Drew of Cwmbran was raffled at the Show by staff from both the Glen-Yr-Afon and its sister Hotel, The Three Salmons raising a total of £420.

This years charities of choice were The Jane Hathaway Leukaemia Fund and Ethan’s Wish to Walk who each received a cheque for £210 .

The Jane Hathaway Fund was set up by Tom and Georgina Hathaway after tragically, their daughter Jane, passed away at the age of 10 after losing a two-year battle against leukaemia in 1985. Now, her loving parents are devoted to raising money in her name by helping the LATCH charity that provides care and support to victims of the disease and their relatives. Their motive for raising money for the charity is simple - to help other families going through the agony of seeing their child suffering. Their money has helped fund research, buy new equipment and increase levels of care to give other families more time with their loved ones.

Ethan Jolosa is a 7 year old boy who was born with Cerebral Palsy (CP). He has a type of CP called Spastic Diplegia which affects his legs, making them tight and having to walk on his toes. Ethan’s family and friends are fundraising for him to have a pioneering operation which will hopefully allow Ethan to have flat feet and give him a chance to learn to walk.

Alex Brown who made the presentation on behalf of the Glen-yr-Afon and its sister Hotel, the Three Salmons said ‘we are keen to ensure that we support local charities whenever possible and are delighted to support both of these very worthy causes’.

Best Wedding Venue Award

We are delighted to announce that the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel has been voted as Best wedding venue in Wales in the Welsh National Wedding Awards.

In the first ever Welsh National Awards couples voted in their thousands to recognise the businesses in the wedding industry that made a difference to their special day.

At a presentation evening held at Parc-y-Scarlets in Llanelli on Sunday 20th November, having earlier been awarded the Best Wedding Venue in the South East region category, the Glen-Yr-Afon went on to beat the 24 other short-listed venues to be crowned the best wedding venue in the whole of Wales.

Tim Strong, General Manager at the Hotel said ‘We are absolutely delighted to receive the award. It is particularly special as the votes are cast by our own customers and recognition at this level is a welcome acknowledgment of the hard-work of all of our staff. We are extremely fortunate to have a dedicated team who are passionate about delivering an exceptional level of customer service that has now been formally recognised at a National level’.

Carol Knight, Wedding Co-ordinator said ‘The planning and running of a wedding here means that each and everyone of our team has an important part to play. We have an enviable reputation for service quality and delivery which is in no small way due to excellent teamwork by all of the staff from the chefs and housekeepers to front-of-house and groundsman. It is only right that brides and grooms have a special day delivered in a professional and caring manner and I am pleased that, after many years of hard-work, this high level of service has been acknowledged by receipt of this prestigious award.’
